Transdisciplinary Stakeholder Dialogues

An important element of transdisciplinary research is the participation of various concerned groups (stakeholders) in the research process. The goal here is not only to raise the legitimacy of proposed solutions to problems or decisions made by policy-makers but also their quality. One challenge in particular is to incorporate the various perceptions of the problem on the part of the stakeholders involved and to work out their importance for the development of a common approach to a solution. For what seems problematic in a given context is not usually decided on the basis of objective criteria alone. Such decisions are made, to a much greater degree, on the basis of uncertain or contested knowledge of a state of affairs, knoweldge that has been interpreted and evaluated against a background of different complexes of interests and value orientations.

This is particularly true of the mostly complex problems arising in the context of sustainable development; but it is also true of issues arising for enterprises and organizations. On the basis of its many years of experience with the organization of stakeholder dialogues in the context of research projects, ISOE offers its skills and know-how for the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of stakeholder dialogues for research, enterprises and organizations. Here one can not only count on the proven facilitation skills of ISOE’s staff members but also on more advanced methods such as formal modeling and participative scenario development.
