Strategy Development for Decision Making for Sustainable Development

Many aspects of the work carried out by the Institute for Social-Ecological Research fill the gap between scientific findings and their practical application; one important product is the formation of strategies which reinforce sustainable development and which are specific to given players and areas of activity. This is because real-life players often ask us what their options are, which alternative is best, and how this can be implemented in an appropriate form. In order to satisfy this need, the ISOE develops recommendations based on our specialist competencies and transdisciplinary collaborations and which are then made accessible to the public.

These recommendations are framed in various ways, depending on what has prompted them and/or the task we have been set. They range from cross-sectoral action and management concepts to issue-based manuals and guidelines for specific players and organisations. The ISOE thus developed guidelines for the sustainable renovation of existing building stock, but also for gender mainstreaming processes in various organisations. The concept for a sustainable mobility culture, which relates to the development of model approaches in urban and transport planning, is aimed at a wider range of players. We devised a set of indicators to communicate the level of sustainability achieved by water supply companies, and demonstrated opportunities to use them in PR activities.
