Empacher, C. / Wehling, P. (2002): Social Dimensions of Sustainability. Concretisation and Operationalisation Perspectives. ISOE Study Text No.11 , Frankfurt am Main, 2002
In its concretisation, the social dimension of sustainability is still the poor relation in the debate over sustainability. This is not least because, in contrast to the ecological dimension, it manifests numerous characteristics that make it hard to operationalise and extremely susceptible to normative influences. The paper looks into the sorely neglected social dimension and tries to provide it with a theoretical and conceptional foundation. Sociological concepts and theories such as social capital (Coleman, Bourdieu) and functionalistic system theory (Parsons) together with fundamental need concepts pertaining to development theory are examined for their possible contribution to the concretisation of the social dimensions of sustainability. Building upon this, guiding orientations of social sustainability are outlined and social indicators to illustrate these orientations are proposed.
