The aim of this study was to answer the following questions: Can the structures and institutions of the German adult education system be used to support knowledge transfer in the field of social-ecological research? Is there on the other hand a demand for input from social-ecological research in some areas of adult education? How could cooperation between social-ecological research and further education be initiated? Answers (to these questions) are based on current discourses in adult education, on a description of the German adult education system, on data from existing surveys and on specific investigations. Fields of affinity that might well need fresh input from social-ecological research are environmental education (education for sustainability) and political adult education, especially with respect to areas like gender or lifestyle and consumerism. But considering their marginal share in the further education market, cooperation between social-ecological research and vocational training and higher education is also highly recommended.
