In order to feedback consumers' demands into the product innovation process a
method for a consumer oriented innovation sounding out was develloped. It was
derrived with help of actual eco-innovations in the product groups food and
clothing.
Consumers, their every-day life knowledge and their (ecological) demands were
focussed with the help of empirical surveys and group discussions in which life
style specific and sociostructural differences had been especially regarded.
The consumer oriented innovation souding out consists of maximally five working steps The method is very suitable to assess long term acceptance of innovations. The sounding out is suited for commodities (e.g. food) as well as for consumer durables (e.g. textiles); probably it is working also for preparing product innovations in other branches (and may be also for service innovations). Additionally conditions were examined under which the sounding out can be employed for a societal (political) material flow management or for a stimulation of sustainable innovations.
