We currently have 25 staff (17 of whom in a scientific capacity) working on a variety of different interdisciplinary research projects. The Institute is supported by a scientific advisory board. ISOE is currently made up of four departments plus ‘Internal Services’. These departments cross-link with the research projects and it is here that knowledge is generated and secured in the longer term, divorced from the daily demands of the research project. The independent ‘Internal Services’ department is comprised of three main work areas: Secretariat and Publication, Organisation and Online Communication, and Finance and Human Resources. This is the hub that takes care of the administrative side of ISOE and develops its material infrastructure, taking care to adapt it to the changing circumstances of the research facility.
At present, ISOE comprises the following departments:

- Transdisciplinary Concepts and Methods. Spokesman: Dr. Engelbert Schramm
- Everyday Ecology, Energy, Consumption. Head of Department: Dr. Irmgard Schultz
